Creating Space for Reflective Practice

what is reflective practice?

Reflective Supervision & Consultation (RS/C) refers to a form of supervision that is increasingly recognized as vitally important for any professional in the field of early childhood education, prevention, and intervention. Focusing on the relationship between supervisor and supervisee is viewed as fundamental, because as humans, we learn and grow in the context of safe and supportive relationships. In RS/C, the supervisor is tasked with helping the supervisee to reflect upon their work and think through their reactions, thoughts, and emotions about the very difficult work that they do. The result is that RS/C has been found to increase job satisfaction, provide higher quality services to children and families, increase professionals’ ability to empathize and view different perspectives, prevent burnout, and decrease turnover.

Many nonprofit early childhood programs are required by grants to provide Reflective Supervision in their agencies. Others have heard about the power of Reflective Supervision and are interested in bringing it to their programs on their own. However, supervisors and agency leaders have often not had the opportunity to experience Reflective Supervision/Consultation themselves. I specialize in helping supervisors and administrators to experience RS/C and to build it into their teams.

Consultation services often include providing RS/C to agency supervisors and supporting them in implementing RS with their supervisees. Early childhood programs are also often interested in monthly Reflective Practice groups for direct service professionals to create space together for reflection.
